Are You Game Updates!

Who says BOARD games were only for BORED people??

On Sep 2007, our fun-loving Brightonites and their friends turned up enthusiastically for the “Are You Game?” event at Quality Hotel, proving that playing board games is the cool way to pass a humid lazy afternoon.
While waiting for all the participants to turn up, some of us helped ourselves to the yummy-licious hi-tea spread; enjoying each other’s company while chomping on the tasty morsels.

The rest of us familiarized ourselves with the games available and the rules of play. The Green Team even gave themselves a head start, playing Saboteur while waiting for the event to formally begin.
Warming up…

At about 3.30pm, the various teams streamed into the ballroom and took to their tables to begin their “warm-up”. After selecting their game of choice, our affable game masters introduced the rules and regulations of the respective games before starting play.

Before long, the entire room was abuzz with excited chatter, and exclamations of “Hey, how can like that one?” and “Oi, you sure or not?” Some groups had serious gamers with concentrated expressions and leaning towards the centre of the table.

Alvin’s friend, Rongli, was playing Pictionary when we approached him. “This is the third time I am joining activities organized by Brighton, and it’s my first time playing board games in such a setting. It’s great fun and I am definitely open to joining you the next time round,” he said.

Similar first-timer to such game-playing setting was Shinn, Weiyang’s friend. It was also Shinn’s first outing with Brighton. He was having a ball of a time playing Take 6 when we interrupted him. “I am enjoying myself a great deal this afternoon. I played Saboteur just now and I also signed up to compete in Transamerica later.”

In the midst of playing in their respective teams, Brightonites and their friends were also busy signing up for “The Final Showdown” – which involved sending a pair from every team to compete in each of the 5 selected games: Ugly Dolls, Diamant, Pictionary, For Sale and Transamerica.
Competition starts now…
The Final Showdown started at 4.30pm. The team representatives took their seats at their appointed stations and the battle began. Competition was stiff—judging from their focused expressions—with every pair determined to inch their way towards the top position.

Shrieks were heard from the (mainly female) Ugly Dolls table, with players competing to snatch up the identical cards they spotted.

Over at the Diamant station, a serious “do-not-disturb” air hung over the table as players decided if they should persist or give up on the next card.

The group playing Pictionary was inching closer and closer towards the drawing board as they concentrated on figuring out what their teammates were drawing. Xin Xin’s friend, Mei Yee, was one of the players for the game. She commented “This is definitely not my first time joining such activities by Brighton and I am really enjoying myself!”

The guys at the For Sale table looked cool and collected while trying to outbid each other for their properties. Joe’s friend, Kenny, was competing at that table. He shared, “This is my second time joining such activities, though I also play basketball at Brighton Sports Club on Wednesdays. And the reason I keep coming back is because I find Brightonites a fun bunch to hang out with!”

Transamerica too had its players engrossed in the game, attempting to connect all their cities together without using up their points.

And finally…

After a gruelling hour of competition, the winners for each game were decided. Ephraim and Jessy won at Ugly Dolls with the fastest eyes and reflexes, while Xin Xin, Mei Yee & Yeli took the top honours for Pictionary.

Jacqueline and Linda emerged the top property speculators at For Sale and Chin Teck single-handedly beat all the other pairs at Diamant – a commendable solo effort! And Vincent and Cheryl were the winners for Transamerica.

Last but not least, the overall championship went to Vincent’s team!!
It was indeed a fun-filled afternoon of laughter and interaction. New friendships were forged and camaraderie was strengthened. A big thank you to everyone for making this event possible!
