Street Soccer Challenge Updates!
There is the English Premier League but then, there was the "Brighton Street Soccer Challenge"!
Two Sundays ago, there was a huge wave of soccer fever rushing through the whole of Singapore! Tucked away in Geylang West Community Centre, we saw 10 teams of players travelling from all parts of Singapore, gathered together to place their best legs forward.
Competition was stiff & teams fought "tooth-and-nail" to inch their way up for the championship. With team names such as "Lightning Strike", "Ablaze", there was little left to imagine about how 'fast' & 'hot' the competition had been. That said, despite the ferocity in the team names and the intensity in which the teams played, hot tempers were totally far from the court!
Needless to say, the presence of pretty ladies among the soccer fanatics were definitely felt on the ground too! Putting on their most enthusiastic smiles & fanatically waving their poms-poms, these ladies were all out to support their favourite teams. Children were also part of the cheer leading team, showing their support for their heroic daddies sweating out on the court!
Team "Dark Horse" led by Caleb lived up to its namesake! Despite their seemingly older players, "Dark Horse" proved to their challengers that they were not to be trifled with. With each match, they rose up the ranks as they took down the younger players with swift & experienced moves.
The Man of the Match would have to go to Ricky Loh, who showed such intensity during play that put the younger competitors to the test. Most notably, Ricky 'wow-ed' the crowd with his 'high leg lift' & shielded a group of female soccer fanatics from a flying stray ball!
The final match was a tough fight between "Hope Utd" and "Zhot". Both teams were equally persistent and a draw game seemed to be in place. However, "Zhot" emerged victorious after kicking in the vanquishing shot that gave the team the winning goal! "Liverfull FC" came in the third placing quite contentedly, as the players were flaunting their bronze medals.
At the end of that day, the court had seen numerous tough but friendly matches, and all the players enjoyed a good "sweaty" workout. Most importantly, friendships were forged between all the players from different teams & sportsmanship was evident despite the competition. Some of these teams have already arranged for more friendly workouts during our weekly Wednesdays Sports Club!
